Brian Gwyn, President & CEO MESSAGE FROM BRIAN GWYN, CEO

Welcome to Cleveland Regional Medical Center (CRMC) where progressive change is anticipated, continual, appreciated and not feared. Leadership is our passion, shared vision is our strategy and decentralized decision making is our tactic. We believe that our community is entitled to the same level of access, the same level of technology and the same level of compassion as people who live in larger cities and further, we believe it is our mission to serve regardless of one's ability to pay.

CRMC is the main hospital in a three hospital system called the Cleveland County HealthCare System; Kings Mountain Hospital (KMH) and Crawley Memorial Hospital make up the other two acute care facilities. We are also an integral part of the Carolinas HealthCare System based in Charlotte North Carolina, which is one of the largest not-for-profit healthcare systems in the country.

These are exciting times at our hospitals. New state of the art operating rooms, new and spacious emergency departments at CRMC and KMH, a new second MRI suite at KMH, a new advanced IMRT Linear Accelerator and a significantly expanded Trauma Center at CRMC complete the major construction projects outlined in our current strategic plan. Clinical Practice Councils are how we make decisions at CRMC; these are operational teams of an equal number of hospital members and medical staff members that come together to decide how best to provide the care to our patients and our community. Hospitalist programs at both facilities are providing our primary care physicians with choices about how to care for their patients who are hospitalized. Through our education and outreach programs, we promote prevention and inter-organizational continuity of care through our collaboration with all the other healthcare providers in Cleveland County. One way to get a sense of who we are as a healthcare system is to get a sense of who we are as individuals; CCHS has been the number one hospital in the nation in both United Way and Relay for Life giving for the last five years in a row.

In specific, it is the mission of both Cleveland Regional Medical Center and Kings Mountain Hospital to provide a focused variety of safe, high quality, patient-centered services and education for the benefit of the people we serve, regardless of their ability to pay. As an organization that values people, we live our mission through core values that include human dignity, compassion, dedication, integrity, stewardship, leadership, service and excellence.

To achieve this mission we focus on five key strategies we believe will sustain us through the national changes coming in healthcare. People, Quality, Service, Growth, Finance. Although we manage these strategies simultaneously, we have identified the first and most important strategy to be the focus on our people. We believe that our success is founded on our hospital family; if we focus on our People, everything else gets better! We further believe that the best way to focus on our people is to develop our leaders! We believe Quality, from the vertical individual or component level perspective is the essential foundation of healing. We define Quality as "safe, effective, appropriate care that meets or exceeds the needs of all those we serve". Our successes in our quality initiatives have garnered us national and international attention. We believe Service is quality from the patient's perspective and encompasses both a horizontal system of healing as well as compassionate caring. For the past 12 years we have seen Growth in our market share that has enabled us to complete our major building programs and add services. We believe it unlikely there will be a trend towards higher reimbursement. As margins decline, growth becomes essential! Finally, to support our mission of providing a safety net to care for those with needs, but no resources, we focus on Finance. Though we know the margin is not the mission…we also understand that without a margin there is no mission!

As partners in the care of patients in our marketplace, the CRMC medical staff and the hospital staff are credentialed, experienced, committed and caring. I cannot say enough about our strong base of highly qualified physicians and the dedication of our hospital's healthcare professionals in this community.

Though the bricks and mortar, the technical equipment, and the system resources are the backbone of our corporation, the heart and soul of this company is the people of Cleveland Regional Medical Center who give so much of their time and their talent to help those in need up and over their individual obstacles. It is these physicians, nurses, administrators, extenders and other care givers who each and every day blend the miracle of compassion with the marvel of technology to make a real difference in the lives of our patients.

Thank you for your interest in Cleveland Regional Medical Center!
